Whitening (Bleaching)

What are the different whitening options?

Teeth naturally become more yellow as we age or consume certain foods or drinks. Whitening teeth can help contribute to a more youthful and vibrant appearance. Our office offers the ability to whiten teeth through at-home bleaching trays, which are clear plastic trays worn on the teeth. A safe and effective whitening agent is placed in the trays and worn periodically as needed; refills are available. We also offer a system of professional whitening strips, which may be easier to use in some cases.

It’s usually necessary to have your teeth cleaned prior to beginning the whitening process.

Are there downsides to whitening?

Teeth whitening can cause temporary sensitivity to hot or cold, so let the dentist or hygienist know if your teeth are already sensitive. In many cases, this can be alleviated by using a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth, or by bleaching for shorter periods of time. It’s also important to remember that existing fillings, crowns, veneers, and bridges will not be lightened by whitening, so it should be done before receiving any new restorations on visible teeth.
